Humanities and Science: A Christian Perpective (HAS)
If we look carefully at this world with open minds and hearts, we will see God’s character revealed everywhere. He is in the created order, in the amazing events of human history, in great works of art, in the highs and lows of human experience and in the richness of cultures. The key is our perspective. How do we see the world? And where do we see God in it? This course takes us on a journey to find out more about the God who speaks through all of these, and then challenges us to renew our minds and take a thoughtful Christian view into the world, our world, and make a lasting difference.

A theme verse
The theme verse for this course is Phil 4:8, where we are told seven things we should think about: whatever is true (various belief systems, and the place of science in finding the truth), whatever is noble (humans, who they are, and their successes and failures), whatever is just (law, economics, politics and international relations, issues of injustice, including stewardship of resources and ethical issues in science and technology), whatever is sacred (the redemptive work of God in the world), whatever is lovely (music, art and literature), and whatever is of good report (the story of God at work in human history).
The hard questions
If God is all-powerful, why is there suffering and poverty in the world? Do I really need to care about the world today and what happens to it? Can Science and Faith coexist together? Could evolution be possible? What do I think about stem cell research? What does GOD think about stem cell research? How does the world’s history affect our future? How can I make any difference in a world that seems to be falling apart?
This course looks at the hard questions facing the world today. As Christians, we should be able to have intelligent conversations with the world about these things, but first we have to take them back to God and ask him, “What do You think?” By seeking God’s heart about these things, we can begin to define our own views, and we can reshape our perspective to see the world through His eyes. Any area of study that deals with the interaction between an infinite, holy God and us finite, sinful human beings will be full of difficult questions, moral dilemmas, and challenges to our long-held traditional beliefs. This course will challenge you and push you to think outside of your own view of the world.

Making a difference
If you leave this course full of ideas but not committed to action, the course has failed in its purpose. Learning is good for its own sake, but when God is in it, there is almost always an application in real life right now. This course is about bringing changes in personal values, lifestyle and ministry. It is about bringing justice where there is none, working for healthy change in government, law and politics, finding ways to benefit others with advances in science, and bringing beauty into every area of life and to every place you go.
