School of Design (SD)
Design is both beautiful and practical. We are inspired by and constrained by nature. The school of design is about learning to communicate and design in a way that people find useful, inspiring and practical.
The School of Design teaches you to recognize and implement relevant design. The first 6 weeks of the school is a broader learning phase where you learn the history, principles and styles of graphic design as a whole. The second half is more focused and relates specifically to design techniques and principles related to print, screen and motion. As these are the three main areas of graphic design, we want to create a broad base of knowledge for students to build on.
Also check out the School of Digital Communications (Design Phase 2) which teaches you even more of the tools you can use to create amazing and life-changing work! These schools are designed to be done together!
Other schools you can do after SD: SDC, HAS, APC, CRS, SCF,

Design is for an audience and entails a lot of marketing thought as well as the message you are trying to convey. This school is all about teaching you to think in this way. Art is a more personal expression of creativity, like a personal journal. Others can look at it, but its meaning is maybe more hidden, leaving the audience to decipher a meaning for themselves. With Design, we want the audience to see what the designer had in his mind’s eye and take away what he is communicating to them. Design is specific, has a clear message and entails a lot of thought, on the designers part, into what will have the greatest impact on the target audience, creating in them the intended action, emotion or response.

Discovery is about Observation. Every new technical advancement is built upon natural laws within creation. Everything around us has been designed… It has a purpose, a destiny, and a function. These facets are built into the fabric of the universe by the designer of it all. We can be inspired by nature and it can lead us to imagine new discoveries by harnessing its power and channeling it into the creative process. Nature also reveals the beauty of God and the diversity of his creative gifts. It also will bring those same things out of you as we study Him.

The foundations for the School of Design and for every aspect of our lives comes from beyond the created order and our solar system, to the ultimate source of life. We know, Biblically that there is one, and only one, God (Deut. 6:4). The School of Design is about discovering design principles built into creation, but to understand anything in creation we have to go back to the Creator and understand who He is! So, that is where the school starts, in a Biblical understanding of the nature and character of God. This is not a religious aspect tacked onto the beginning and end of the school, but an exploration into God’s processes, as He creates and leads us into a Theology of Design! An understanding of God that infuses all aspects of design and creation!

These principles are used across the board in all types of media from print to screen to motion design. These aspects would be present in all good design and a knowledge of them enables the designer to organize his thoughts and information on the page, take good photography or shoot captivating scenes. Everything form colour theory to layout principles to contrast, repetition of the eye, grids and thumb-nailing. You will get the tools you need to create great design, the ability to explain why it is good and the ability to critique work. Your photography will be better, your design skills improved and you will know what to emphasize in the process!
